38. UNRESTRICTED
by Joe Racer

You may have heard of Primary Colors, the novel that was written by someone inside the Clinton campaign. It told the behind-the-scenes stories in a completely fictional setting. This novel does the same for the world of stock car racing.

If you want a great read, you need UNRESTRICTED!

39. Ray Fox: Sly in the Stock Car Forest

Godwin Kelly's biography of
legendary NASCAR
mechanic Ray Fox

Ray Fox was one of the legendary mechanics and car owners from NASCAR's early days. He built cars for some of the biggest names in racing: Junior Johnson, Fireball Roberts and David Pearson.

Fireball

Godwin Kelly's biography of
legendary racer Glenn "Fireball" Roberts

This is not a racing book. This is the story of an complex and amazing individual who happened to be one of the greatest race car drivers of his time. The glory days of racing serve as the back drop for a stormy love triangle that was the talk of the tiny resort village of Daytona Beach during the late 50’s and early ’60s

Glenn “Fireball” Roberts was the first modern superstar of stock car racing. He was truly ahead of his time and already a legend in his late 20’s. Unfortunately, for the woman he loved and the racing community, his time ran out far too early.

Godwin Kelly became enamored with this story while working on a special feature story for the Daytona Beach News-Journal’s coverage of the 2004 July race. During the research, he discovered there was much more to Glenn Roberts than the “Fireball” persona the public saw.

Best Damn Garage in Town...
The World According to Smokey

Many years ago, Smokey was asked to introduce racing to a group
of under-privileged kids at Charlotte. It was at that point that he realized
that a whole generation (kids and race fans) was coming along
without knowing how racing got started. More importantly,
he realized that most of the people who knew were not around anymore.

In 1996, Smokey sat down and started writing his history of racing
to make sure that it would be preserved. What he ended up with
is an 1,100 page, three-volume set that covers a history of his life,
stock car racing, his years at Indy and all of his inventions.

This text was removed from the recording
at the request of Mr. Berggren's employer.
I am sure you can guess why.

Here is what was left out of the recording:

Part 1
Getting back to Billy Judge and his low opinion of France. Turns out
during World War number two tires and gas were hard to get (both were
rationed). France, for whatever reason didn’t spend any time killing
Germans or japs. He stayed home. (I used to call him a holy roller
draft dodger.) While at home he apparently pissed the government off by
selling stolen government merchandise; hot rationing stamps for tires
and fuel. They wanted to penalize him with a lengthy stay in prison. I
guess by the time Billy got to it, the government had a “done deal,”
and France’s ass was mud. Well, Billy goes to work and convinces the
government that nothing really bad happened, and the government, said
“Sorry we bothered you.” Billy then says, “You owe me $1,500 France.”
To which France says, “Send you money tomorrow” (check is in the mail).
Fifteen years later, just before Billy died, this came up and Billy
said, “that son-of-a-bitch has never paid one dime of it.” Who knows?
This one thing might have canceled the whole NASCAR adventure. (The
thing that really pissed Billy off was that by then France was in
jets.)

Part 2
I left NASCAR in 1971 over a dispute regarding rules. When I left, I
told France Sr, I’m gone, I’ve had all of your shit I can handle.” He
said, “You’ll be back.” I said, “If you don’t believe I’m gone, count
the days till I get back.” This is 28 years later, I ain’t been back
yet. It’s no secret NASCAR don’t give a damn ’bout Smokey. In reality,
they may have total justification. I do not in any way feel I’ve been
singled out for mistreatment. I got same deal every other racer got
back then…France Sr. just shit all over all of us.
